Harvard Professor Talks About Online Casino Addiction
Published on: May 3, 2009
One of the main reasons the USA passed a law in 2002 regarding online casinos was the thought that they are very addictive. In fact, most consider online casinos more addictive than land casinos due to the ease of which one can play. In light of the European Union decree the US and several other countries have to open up their country to outside businesses. Rather than private online casinos based in that specific country they must allow for public companies. The countries also have to allow foreign companies into the mix.
With these changes imminent the USA has had to evaluate their options. The EU says that to go against them is illegal and could bring exclusion from the EU. A Harvard professor decided to do a little research on his own. The director of the Medical School Division of Addictions has now gone on record stating that online casinos are actually less addictive than land based casinos.
He stated that his team studied internet gambling patterns. What they found is that most online gamblers are moderate in their spending. They tend to be more cautious. The professor also found that in the last 20 years problems regarding online gambling have remained about the same, even though there are more individuals using online casinos.
This doctor is going against other scientific findings about the increase of addiction. He believes that any prohibition of online casinos is not going to be enforced. It would take too much effort to block out all casinos. In fact what would most likely happen would be the opening of several illegal sites, which would provide more issues in reality.
The past has taught us a lot about prohibition of items. Just look at the prohibition of alcohol. It didn’t work. Many families either made their own or would bootleg liquor across country lines. The fact is that regulating the sites and ensuring laws are followed is the better way to go.
The Harvard professor is just one of the supporters of online casinos. There are others out there, who have looked at scientific data which support his claims. There are also many results stating that online gambling is a problem. In truth you must wonder how honest individuals are in regards to surveys being conducted. This can certainly throw off the findings. For now though it seems there is still a question as to whether online gambling is addictive. For some it most likely is.
