Top Online Gambling Brand Must Relocate for Advertising Purposes
Published on: August 14, 2007
William Hill, one of the online gambling industries more recognizable brands, is moving their operations base to Gibraltar. The famous sportsbook currently runs operations out of the Netherland Antilles, alongside a number of other popular online gambling destinations such as Interpoker, Littlewoods casino and Betfred.
The move is suspected to be the result of a change in the UK’s recent advertising ban against gambling operations that operate outside of the European Economic Area (EEA). This ban is set to commence on September 1st.
As you may have guessed, the Netherland Antilles is not a member of the EEA, but Gibraltar sure is (and is home to a number of top brands including 888.com and PartyGaming). By making the move to Gibraltar, William Hill can maintain all advertising efforts, which could only strengthen their position of being a top brand in the gambling world, as nearly a thousand other companies will be left without a voice in the UK when the ban commences.
Although the law currently bans UK advertising from non EEA countries, not all is lost for some. If the jurisdiction can pass a strict assessment of their regulatory standards then they will be granted an exemption from the ban. Unfortunately for those operating out of the Netherland Antilles, the region did not pass the assessment. So perhaps we will begin to see a number of relocations occurring in the next little while.
